FOSSIL  TILES

Plaster Bas-relief

Wall Art

These decorative tiles are crafted by artist Irena Tweedie through the process of pressing flowers, plants and other objects into clay and making a plaster cast from the impression. The cast is then used to form a mold allowing a limited reproduction of tiles made of fine art plaster.

Measuring approximately 6.7 x 6.7 x 0.75 inches, each piece is individually hand finished and unique in subtle variations that highlight the handmade process. The tiles are varnished and ready to hang with a hole in the back allowing for a flush look when hung. Complete with tile name and artist signature on the back.

By casting objects I seek to reveal their tactile essence, preserving a moment in tangible form and transforming the ordinary into artifacts of memory.

I began casting objects as a craft project with my son. We initially pressed his toys and little trinkets into clay observing the texture prints they left behind and making small plaster cast of them. From there I went on to cast plants from my garden and seashells I have collected over the years. Each piece emerged like a fossil, a little vignette of a memory, manifesting piece by piece the Fossil Tiles collection.
