Fossil Tiles are crafted through the process of pressing flowers, plants and other objects into clay and making a plaster cast from the impression. The cast is then used to form a silicone mold allowing a limited reproduction of tiles made of fine art plaster.

Measuring approximately 6.7 x 6.7 x 0.75 inches, each piece is individually hand finished and unique in subtle variations that highlight the handmade process. The tiles are varnished and ready to hang with a hole at the back allowing for a flush look when hung.

I began casting objects as a craft project with my son. We initially pressed his toys and little trinkets into clay observing the texture prints they left behind and making plaster casts of them. Inspired by these fossil like casts, the way they captured something that was no longer there, I continued to explore this process. I went on to cast plants from my garden and seashells I have collected over the years. I loved the subtle elegance and organic texture of the finished work and what  began as a personal project—creating tiles to fill an empty wall in my home—soon grew beyond that into the Fossil Tiles collection.
